GeoPlay collects as little as it can to run the game. This page explains what that is, why, and what you can ask for.

Who is responsible for my data?

GeoPlay (geoplay.pro) is responsible for the personal data described here. You can reach us at contact@geoplay.pro.

What data does GeoPlay collect?

If you play without an account, GeoPlay creates a guest player for your browser with a random name (such as SwiftFalcon42) and stores your answers and scores. A sign-in token for that guest is kept in your browser’s local storage.

If you create an account, GeoPlay also stores your email address, the display name and country you choose (your country’s flag is shown next to your name), and your password, only as a secure hash, never in plain text. Your games, scores, streaks and any groups you create or join are linked to your account. If you played as a guest first, those games move to your new account.

Like every website, the server receives technical details of each request, such as your IP address and browser. They are used for security, for example to limit repeated sign-in attempts, and to fix problems.

What is the data used for?

To run the game: saving your progress, scoring your answers, building leaderboards and groups, and sending the password-reset emails you ask for. Your display name, country flag and scores are shown publicly on the leaderboards; your email address never is. GeoPlay does not sell your data and does not show ads.

Does GeoPlay use cookies?

When you create an account or log in, GeoPlay sets one cookie, geoplay_remember, for up to a year, so you stay signed in if your browser clears its local storage. Logging out removes it. It is only sent to GeoPlay’s sign-in service and cannot be read by scripts on the page. The admin area uses its own session cookie. The public pages, the blog and the games set no cookies of their own.

GeoPlay uses Google Analytics 4 to count visits and see which pages are used, which helps decide what to improve. Google Analytics may set cookies. On your first visit a cookie banner asks whether you accept analytics cookies. If you choose Reject, analytics runs without cookies and only anonymous counts are sent. For visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, analytics also runs without cookies until you choose Accept (Google Consent Mode). Your choice is saved in your browser, and you can change it at any time with the button on this page. Advertising features are switched off for everyone.

When you create an account, Google reCAPTCHA (“I’m not a robot”) checks that you are a person and not a bot. reCAPTCHA is covered by Google’s privacy policy and terms of service.

Who else receives the data?

GeoPlay is hosted by Hostinger, which stores the database and runs the website, and password-reset emails are sent through Hostinger’s mail service. Google receives analytics data (Google Analytics) and bot-check data (reCAPTCHA) as described above. No one else receives your personal data unless the law requires it.

How long is data kept?

Account data is kept while your account exists. Guest players who have not played for 30 days are deleted automatically, with their games. If you ask for your account to be deleted, it is deleted together with its games and group memberships.

What are my rights?

You can ask to see the personal data GeoPlay holds about you, to correct it, to have it deleted, or to receive a copy. You can change your display name and country yourself in your profile; for anything else, email contact@geoplay.pro from the address on your account. If you are in the EU or UK you can also complain to your data protection authority.

Children

Anyone can play GeoPlay without an account and without giving any personal data. Accounts are for people aged 13 and over, and everyone confirms this when they sign up. If you believe a younger child has created an account, email contact@geoplay.pro and it will be removed.
