About Border Hop

Border Hop is a free daily geography puzzle about land borders. You are given two countries, a start and an end. Name the countries in between, crossing one land border at a time, until the two are joined.

Every guess is shown on the map and coloured by how close it is to a shortest route. Green is on the shortest path, yellow and orange are small detours and red is far off. If you are stuck you can ask for a hint, which names the next country on the way.

Every player gets the same route each day.

What you’ll learn

  • Which countries share a land border
  • The shortest land routes across continents
  • Overseas territories that create surprising borders, like France and Brazil
  • The position of small and landlocked countries

Why play Border Hop every day?

Knowing who borders whom is the key to reading a map. Border Hop makes you think like a traveller crossing a continent, and the colours teach you better routes each time.

It is a good daily brain teaser for map lovers. No account needed, and it works on phones and computers.

Border Hop FAQ

How do you play Border Hop?

You get a start and an end country. Type countries that link them by land, one border at a time. The game colours each guess by how close it is to a shortest route.

Which country has the most neighbours?

China and Russia share the record, with 14 neighbouring countries each, so they often make useful stepping stones.

Is Border Hop good for learning a map?

Yes. Each route makes you picture a whole chain of neighbours, and the colours show you a better path when you take a detour. After a few weeks most players can cross Europe, Africa or South America in their head.

Is Border Hop free to play?

Yes. Border Hop is completely free, with no sign-up, no download and no limit on practice rounds. It works in any browser on a phone, tablet or computer.
