About Guess the Department

Guess the Department is a free French departments quiz (in French: quiz des départements français) about the departments of France. You see one department at a time, shown only by its outline. You have six guesses to name it, and every miss tells you how far away the answer is and in which direction.

Found it? Two bonus rounds follow: name the region it belongs to, then its prefecture, the main town where the department is run from. You can type a department’s name or its number, such as 75 for Paris or 2A for Corse-du-Sud.

The game covers the departments of metropolitan France, and no department comes back until you’ve seen all 96.

What you’ll learn

  • The shape and position of the French departments
  • Department numbers, the ones seen on car plates and postcodes
  • Which of the 13 regions each department is in
  • The prefecture of every department
