About Guess the State

Guess the State is a free daily game about the 50 states of the United States. Each day you see one state, shown only by its outline. Type a state to guess. You have six tries, and after each miss you are told how far your guess is from the answer and in which direction to look.

Once you’ve found the state, there is a bonus round: name its capital. Many people know the states but not their capitals. Is it Albany or New York City? Sacramento or Los Angeles?

Every player gets the same state each day, and a new one appears at midnight.

What you’ll learn

  • The shape and position of all 50 US states
  • Which states are neighbours
  • The capital of every state
  • The two-letter postal code of each state

Why play Guess the State every day?

Knowing the states is useful for school, travel and following the news, and it is a classic quiz topic. A daily game is a gentle way to learn them: one state a day is easy to remember, and the distance and direction hints teach you the map as you play.

It is popular with students revising for geography tests and with anyone outside the US who wants to know the country better. No sign-up, and it works on phones and computers.

Guess the State FAQ

How many states are in the game?

All 50 US states. Washington, D.C. is not a state, so it is not one of the answers.

Rectangular states like Wyoming, Colorado and the Dakotas look alike, and small north-eastern states such as Vermont and New Hampshire are often mixed up.

Is Guess the State free to play?

Yes. Guess the State is completely free, with no sign-up, no download and no limit on practice rounds. It works in any browser on a phone, tablet or computer.
